Physical Ability Test

Learn about the two ways to complete the police officer physical agility testing requirement.

OPD offers two options for the physical ability (agility) testing requirement to become a police officer. The OPD Physical Ability Test (PAT) is offered every other month in Oakland. The second option is the Work Sample Test Battery (WSTB). OPD will accept WSTB results from the South Bay Regional Public Safety Training Consortium (SBRPSTC)*.

The PAT includes the following components:

  1. Cone Maze
  2. Fence Climb
  3. Ditch Jump
  4. Stair Climb/Window Entry
  5. Dummy Drag
  6. Handcuffing

The WSTB includes the following components:

  1. 99-yard obstacle course
  2. 32-foot body drag (165 pounds)
  3. Six-foot chain link fence climb
  4. Six-foot solid wall climb
  5. 500-yard sprint

*The South Bay Regional Public Safety Training Consortium (SBRPSTC) requires a 1.5 mile run in addition to the five events above. OPD does not require a maximum time in which to complete the 1.5 mile run.
