Enhancing local and regional transit connections and improving the bike network in Jack London.

About

The 2nd Street Transit Hub & Bike Lane Connection project aims to create safer and easier connections for transit riders by linking four AC Transit bus routes, the SF Bay Ferry terminal, and the Jack London Amtrak Station. The project proposes to achieve these goals by:

Establishing a transit hub by providing real-time transit information, seating, and shelter on 2nd Street between Clay Street and Washington Street (see map), at the southern terminus of the forthcoming Broadway Bus Only lanes, which will provide more reliable bus transit access from Jack London Square to BART, Downtown Oakland, and beyond.
Improving lighting, sidewalk, pedestrian crossings, and wayfinding at and between transit stations.
Providing stations for bikeshare and other micromobility parking (scooters, etc.) adjacent to the transit hub to support convenient transit connections.
Connecting existing bike lanes across a one-block gap and reconfiguring parking.
Making upgrades to improve bus operations, such as concrete bus pads and layover amenities for bus drivers.

The project scope was defined through prior planning and engagement efforts, including plans such as the Downtown Oakland Specific Plan and the Howard Terminal Transportation Plan. Building on past engagement, the project team met with key stakeholders from Fall 2023 to Winter 2024 to ensure that the project scope aligned with current community needs and to inform the conceptual plans.
