If you are in immediate danger or the crime is happening right now, call 911.
You can report a crime to the Police Department in person, over the phone or online. Only certain incidents can be reported online.
Crimes that Can be Reported Online
- Annoying phone calls
- Attempted auto theft
- Bad/fraudulent checks
- Catalytic Converter Theft
- Commercial or Residential burglary
- Defrauding an inn-keeper
- Forgery
- Fraudulent use of credit card
- Hit and run
- Identity theft
- Illegal dumping
- Lost or stolen property (excluding motor vehicles, firearms, and license plates)
- Price gouging during a natural disaster
- Theft of dog
- Theft of mail
- Vandalism or graffiti
- Vehicle burglary (property stolen from a motor vehicle)
- Vehicle tampering
To report a crime online, you must confirm that:
- The crime is not an emergency
- You are at least 18 years old
- You have a working email address
- The crime occurred within Oakland city limits
- The crime did not happen on a freeway or highway

Crimes that Cannot be Reported Online
If any of the following apply to your incident, you must report the crime in person or by phone.
- Crimes outside the City of Oakland
- Lost or stolen motorized vehicle (automobile or other motorized vehicle)
- Lost or stolen firearm
- Lost or stolen vehicle license plate
- Hate crimes
- If the damage or value is over $5,000
- If you know who committed the crime
- If you have evidence related to the crime, such as photographs and/or video

If you suspect police misconduct, waste, fraud, abuse of city resources or other public ethics concerns, you can file a claim against the City of Oakland.
What to Expect After Filing the Report
- After you submit the report, you will receive an incident number and report, which may be required for insurance purposes.
- If additional information is needed, an investigator will follow up.
- To check the status or add information to an existing incident report visit the online reporting system. You will need your incident number.
